How do you attract the right customers?
Things to consider if you want to increase your business:
- Who is your ideal customer?
Identify your ideal customer(s). What is it about this customer or these customers make them ideal to you? Do they belong to a specific demographic? What do your best customers have in common? This will be your ideal customer profile. If you understand who that ideal customer is, it is easier to develop a strategy to attract more customers that fit your needs and preferences.
- What is the size of your market?
It’s important to know how much you can increase your business. Knowing how big your market is and the number of competitors will help you create realistic goals and expectations from your marketing efforts.
- What makes you or your business unique?
Unless your specific type of business is incredibly unique and in demand, you must be able to differentiate your business from every other one out there. Every business has a personality, or should have (see our Branding section). Perhaps you or your business has a good story about how the business came to be. Or maybe your business philosophy or approach is what makes you different. In marketing, we want to emphasize your strengths and give potential customers a way to relate and connect to you.
- Who are your competitors?
For some businesses, perhaps your business is based primarily on referrals. If that is the case, you may feel like the answer to this question is not important. That’s not necessarily true. Every business should spend some time researching who offers the same or similar goods or services in your area or online. Identify the ones that are highly successful. Why are they so successful? It’s possible that you will not discover anything specific. But there is also the chance that you learn something. We’re not suggesting that you mimic your competitor. After all, we want authenticity and for you to portray what makes you stand out. But you may learn something that could be valuable in the way you choose to market your business.
We hope you find these questions helpful. Yes, there are only four. We would have a more thorough analysis process if we were going to develop a marketing strategy for you. But these are the four most important questions every business owner should ask themselves regarless of whether they want to do any marketing or not. If we can help you, please reach out to us.
